Guiding Principles
‘Ōlelo Everyday, Everywhere: Mahina ‘Ōlelo Hawai‘i 2026, will be our launch for community fieldtesting, but this effort is year-round, reminding us that ‘Ōlelo Hawai‘i is alive every day, everywhere.
Kanaka-Led, Roots-Grounded: This campaign belongs to the lāhui, guided by the vision of its founders and carried forward by our kaiāulu. It will not be owned or controlled by any single institution.
Kāko‘o mau, Not Control: We welcome kōkua from organizations, schools, and businesses. Their role is to amplify, support, and resource this movement — not to direct or dominate it.
Accessibility: Kākou a pau loa (Everyone) has a place — fluent speakers, learners, and supporters. The pihi creates safe entry points for engagement at every level.
Global Belonging: This campaign includes our diaspora. Kānaka who live away from Hawai‘i can still wear the pihi, create spaces for ‘ōlelo, and to always remain connected through the language of our ancestors.
“Language acquisition is less about studying and more about developing a feeling.”
